De Re Metallica : Je fais le portrait du roi – I draw the King’s figure

Claire Bouffay vit et travaille à Marseille. Mêlant recherches et sculpture, elle utilise des techniques de métallurgie, d’orfèvrerie ou de fonderie pour reproduire et réinterprèter des objets anciens, et met en lumière les récits qu’ils contiennent et les systèmes de valeur et de production auxquels ils sont liés. Elle s’intéresse notamment à l’histoire des économies de marché, et en propose une relecture porteuse d’alternatives. Sa pratique est entrelacée de moments de travail collectif, de temps de transmission et de collaborations. En 2024, elle reçoit la Bourse Mécènes du Sud pour De Re Metallica, un projet de sculpture traitant des origines du capitalisme. Elle a exposé dans plusieurs institutions et centres d’art, en France et à l’étranger, et est résidente à Artagon Marseille.

J’ai envie de raconter un certain nombre d’histoires qui parlent d’argent, de magie et d’amour. Je voudrais parler de la magie destructrice exprimée dans les pièces de monnaie, la magie qui n’est pas la pièce elle même ni même le concept d’argent en soi mais quelque chose d’autre, l’expression d’un certain rapport au monde, d’une distance au monde, l’expression d’une domination. J’aimerais comprendre par quel sortilège le capitalisme a modifié notre rapport au monde et comprendre comment nous désensorceler

Claire Bouffay lives and works in Marseille. Combining research and sculpture, she uses techniques from metallurgy, goldsmithing and foundry work to reproduce and reinterpret ancient objects, highlighting the narratives they contain and the systems of value and production to which they are linked. She is particularly interested in the history of market economies, offering a reinterpretation that suggests alternatives. Her practice is interwoven with periods of collective work, knowledge-sharing and collaborations. In 2024, she was awarded the Mécènes du Sud grant for De Re Metallica, a sculpture project exploring the origins of capitalism. She has exhibited at several institutions and art centers, both in France and abroad, and is currently an artist-in-residence at Artagon Marseille.

I wanna tell a number of stories that are about money, magic, and love. I wanna talk about the destructive magic expressed in the coins, magic that is not the coin itself, or even the concept of money on its own, it’s something else, the manifestation of a certain relation to the world, a distance from the world, the manifestation of domination. I would like to understand through which spell capitalism shifted our way to relate to the world, and to understand how to take this spell off.
